BIO BANDING
GUIDELINES
At Cedar Stars Academy, we recognize that players develop at different rates physically, technically, tactically, and psychologically. Our MLS Tier 1 Bio-Banding initiative aims to group players based on biological maturity rather than chronological age, ensuring a more appropriate, competitive, and developmental environment.
Bio-Banding at Cedar Stars Academy is a player-centered development model that complements traditional age-group soccer by grouping players according to biological maturity rather than birth year. Using growth and maturation data, players are periodically assessed and placed in training environments that provide the right level of physical, technical, and psychological challenge.
This approach allows late developers to compete on a level playing field while encouraging early developers to rely on skill, decision-making, and game intelligence instead of physical advantages. Bio-banding is integrated into the MLS Tier 1 program as a developmental tool, with league competition remaining age-based, ensuring players receive the best environment for both long-term growth and match-day performance.
Research has shown that bio-banding can improve talent identification, increase player confidence, and create more balanced and effective learning opportunities.
